Brand Anchor Framework: staying creative, staying consistent

Three anchors let a brand change how it shows up without losing who it is: non-negotiables, supporting elements and opposites.

Brand Anchor Framework: staying creative, staying consistent

Every brand reaches the same point. The website needs a refresh, a new product line needs packaging, the social team wants to try a new format, a pop-up needs a look. Each project has its own objective, and each one pulls the brand in a slightly different direction. Do this for two years and the brand starts to look like five different companies.

The opposite mistake is just as common: locking everything down so tightly that every execution looks the same and the brand stops feeling alive.

STRE's Brand Anchor Framework: staying creative, staying consistent

We believe brands are built for the long game. Different objectives can need different expressions, but the brand's world and story should stay cohesive. That is why we developed the Brand Anchor Framework, a simple tool our team, our clients and their partners use to make creative decisions with freedom, while staying true to the brand.

It's easy to come up with creative ideas, but how do you keep a brand consistent with its story, strategy and identity?

The three anchors

Pinpointing the key traits and elements that are essential to who you are as a brand

1. Non-negotiables

The core traits that are always true to the brand, in every execution, on every channel. If one of these is missing, it is not the brand. Non-negotiables are usually few: a handful of traits, not a list of twenty.

2. Supporting elements

Traits that belong to the brand but do not need to lead every time. They can step forward for one campaign and step back for the next. This is where creative range lives: a playful tone for social, a calmer one for packaging, both still recognisably the brand.

A brand doesn't have to be limited to a handful of traits: like people, brands have distinct supporting qualities

3. Opposites

Traits that contradict the brand's DNA. They should never shape how the brand looks, sounds or behaves, even when they are trending or when someone on the team personally likes them. Naming the opposites out loud is often the most useful part of the exercise, because it ends arguments before they start.

The Brand Anchor Framework helps teams make more informed, strategic decisions on creative and design executions

STRE's own anchors

We use the framework on ourselves first. These are STRE's anchors.

STRE's Brand Anchor: non-negotiables at the core, supporting elements around them, opposites on the outside
  • Non-negotiables: start with strategy, intentionally creative, passionately curious, long-term game, spirit of partnership.
  • Supporting elements: positive energy, culturally attuned, discerning, challenging convention, global mindset.
  • Opposites: trend-chasing, short-term thinking, arbitrary decisions, following the crowd.

Anchors are a balance, not a checklist

The non-negotiables are always present, but not always at the same volume. For every execution, we adjust the balance across these elements based on the objective and context. A strategy workshop turns "start with strategy" up to the maximum; a launch campaign turns up "intentionally creative". That is where the flexibility comes from, while the brand keeps its integrity.

How we use it

  • At the start of a project: we agree the anchors with the client's decision makers, so every later choice has a reference point.
  • In briefs: every brief to a designer, agency or KOL names the non-negotiables and the opposites.
  • In reviews: instead of "I like it" or "I don't", we ask which anchor a piece supports and whether it touches an opposite.
  • When the team grows: new hires and partners get the anchors on day one, so the brand stays consistent as the business scales.

Strategy, not taste

The Brand Anchor keeps every party, from the internal team to agencies and KOLs, from drifting off the brand strategy or deciding on personal taste. Over time, those small drifts add up to brand dilution. With clear anchors, decisions are guided by strategy, not made arbitrarily.

Strong brands are not built by chasing trends or following personal preference. They are built through consistency, clarity and long-term thinking.
